Coffee is a popular source of caffeine. In addition , it is thought that many other components of coffee have health benefits , including lower levels of blood sugar . These components include chlorogenic acid, quinides , lignans and trigonelline .

Studies suggest that drinking caffeinated coffee can raise blood pressure and potentially increase the risk of heart disease. However, these results were found in decaffeinated coffee, and some trials actually determined that chlorogenic acid may lower blood pressure.

Researchers believe that the different effects of roasted coffee and oil are due to a compound called hydroxyhydroquinone ( HHQ ), which was created from the roasting process and may block the beneficial effects of chlorogenic acid on blood pressure .

In a recent study , researchers conducted a comprehensive literature search to identify studies evaluating the association between coffee consumption and liver cancer , or hepatocellular carcinoma. Hepatocellular carcinoma ( HCC) is the most common form of primary liver cancer in children and adults . It starts in the hepatocytes, the main type of liver cells. Sixteen studies were identified for inclusion .

The researchers found 16 studies that reported on 3,153 cases of HCC , the risk of developing cancer was 40 percent lower in people who drank any amount of coffee compared to those who drank none.

The low coffee consumption was associated with a reduced risk of 28 percent , while a high coffee consumption was associated with a reduction of 66 percent. The authors noted that the relationship between coffee and the risk of liver cancer was constant, even when adjusted for various factors such as alcohol consumption and gender of the patient.

The authors concluded that coffee consumption may reduce the risk of liver cancer . However, further research is needed, since the association pordrĂa be the result of a reduction in coffee consumption by persons with liver diseases. Well-designed clinical trials are needed .
